Multiple Sclerosis and Yoga

Laura Young, Honours BSc, Certified Yoga Teacher
Yoga has been an integral part of Laura’s life for more than ten years. Years of a dedicated Ashtanga yoga practice led her to seize the opportunity to obtain her certification so she could share her love of yoga, educate, and guide students as they travel along their personal journey. 2008 was a year of transformational change as Laura successfully completed the Integrative Yoga Therapy Teacher Training Certification. As a teacher, Laura is thrilled to share each students experience and path to optimal health and balance. She sees herself as a mentor providing tools, knowledge and a safe, comfortable environment for self exploration. Laura continues to relish in her personal practice to learn, grow and embrace her true self. She shares the passion of her mentors, colleagues and friends that the benefits of yoga span all aspects of our daily lives, ultimately healing, strengthening and balancing the body, mind and soul.

Are you interested to learn and experience how yoga can support the management of Multiple Sclerosis and not to mention all aspects of your daily life? Have you typically associated yoga only as a stretching exercise and one where the body moves into unfathomable positions? Well you are not alone, in fact many people who embark on an exploration of yoga are pleasantly surprised of how much it can offer and that it provides tools available to everyone! Yoga is an ancient science for healing for the mind, body, and soul. The benefits of regularly integrating yoga in your life are infinite. MS Village is pleased to provide an ongoing article for you!

The segment will feature physical postures (including modifications to meet everyone’s needs), breathe awareness exercises and meditation techniques.

These suggestions will support many of the symptoms experienced by individuals with MS, side effects associated with medications, as well as helping you manage stress and anxiety.

Practicing yoga helps you to accept, love and work with what your body will allow you to do, at anytime in your life, whether or not you are living with MS. You may notice, just to name a few, an increase in energy; improved mobility, range of motion and balance; a more positive outlook; effective stress management and enhanced focus.

Encourage your family and friends to share in this experience with you!

Disclaimer

Since Yoga is a physical exercise, participants are advised to speak with their healthcare professional to ensure Yoga is a safe and beneficial activity before participating. Although Yoga can help alleviate MS symptoms, it is not to be construed as a form of medical treatment.
