What to expect

Starting disease-modifying therapy is a big step in helping control MS disease progression.

The possible benefits of these medications include:

  • Reduction in numbers of new lesions as shown on MRI
  • Reduction in the number of relapses
  • Reduction in progression of disability (which can help maintain ability)
  • Probable reduction in future disease activity
  • Improvement in quality of life

Not all disease-modifying therapies are the same, and you should have a conversation with your neurologist about which medications offer the most benefits in the above disease measures.

See our discussion guides for helpful questions to ask your healthcare team.

You may be reluctant to start therapy—many people are—but you’re not alone.

Watch, as some people with MS who are on disease-modifying treatment, tell you what therapy has done for them and show you what you can expect.
