Sit comfortably (i.e. legs crossed or extended on the floor or seated in a chair; or try sitting on the edge of a pillow to raise your hips), and become aware of your posture. Sense your sit bones (the pointy bone that you can feel in each buttock) are grounded, your torso is upright and you feel length in your spine all the way to the crown of your head; chest is lifted, chin is parallel to the floor and shoulders are wide and relaxed away from your ears. Allow your arms to be held relaxed resting on your knees, palms facing up.
Gently close your eyes and tune into your breath.
Throughout the entire meditation, try to keep your focus on your breath. Your mind and emotions will try to take you away with thoughts and feelings; simply watch these waves come and go, always returning to your breath. Even if you have to “come back to your breath” a thousand times throughout the session do not worry, even the most experienced people who meditate experience this! Once your time is complete take a few moments to reflect on your experience, write in a journal or perhaps draw a picture. Regular meditation can help to centre ourselves and increase our self awareness.
Ensure you find a quiet and calm space, with no distractions to complete this exercise. You can set a timer for this exercise; start with 5 minutes and slowly over time work your way up to longer sessions.
