Treating MS early

Researchers and scientists agree that treating MS with DMDs as early as possible is extremely beneficial. Current data shows damage to the central nervous system occurs very early on in the development process of the disease, with irreversible consequences. To avert these types of setbacks, early treatment is strongly recommended.

There are several benefits of early treatment. Some include (1):

  • Better chance of maintaining current level of functions and abilities
  • The progression of the disease is delayed; meaning early treatment can help maintain ability
  • The number and severity of relapses are reduced
  • The number of brain lesions is reduced

In some cases, people may be reluctant to begin treatment for certain reasons that may include:

  • Disappearance of symptoms: in some people it might seem as if MS has disappeared, but in actuality, it attacks your central nervous system silently, causing significant damage with no signs of symptoms
  • Fear of needles: many people are needle-phobic; however manufacturers are finding less intimidating and more comfortable methods to help with self-injection anxiety
  • Expenses: medications can be expensive; however, each manufacturer provides financial assistance programs to aid with therapy costs
  • Fear of side effects: each medication has side effects, but the manufacturer and your physician will provide strategies to help reduce and make them more manageable—plus, over time most side effects will diminish
